Grand-Mère, Shawinigan: why both names
Grand-Mère stopped being a town on 1 January 2002. On that day seven municipalities were joined under the name Shawinigan: Shawinigan, Shawinigan-Sud, Grand-Mère, Saint-Georges-de-Champlain, Lac-à-la-Tortue, Saint-Gérard-des-Laurentides and Saint-Jean-des-Piles. That same year, Quebec’s Commission de toponymie made Grand-Mère official as the name of a sector of the new city.
So we write both, and it is not a flourish. A mechanic around here says “Grand-Mère”; a shipping label, a registry or a lookup engine says “Shawinigan”. Both point at the same spot, ours, and a supplier you cannot find under the name you use is a supplier you call less often.
In practice it means a shop in Shawinigan-Sud, in Saint-Jean-des-Piles or in Lac-à-la-Tortue has its tire supplier inside its own city, even if the street address does not carry the name of its sector.
